How to Play Word Guess Game
Find the hidden five-letter word in six accepted guesses. Each row gives you information about letters and positions; use it to narrow your next choice.
Enter a word and read the feedback
Type five letters with your keyboard or use the on-screen keys, then select Enter. Use Backspace to remove a letter before submitting. A guess must be accepted by the game's English word list. An incomplete or rejected entry does not count as one of your six attempts.
The clues use text and symbols as well as color:
| Symbol | State | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| ✓ | Right place | This letter matches the answer in this position. |
| ↔ | Different place | A copy of this letter is in the answer, but not in this position. |
| × | No unused copy | No copy remains for this tile after other matches are counted. The letter may be absent, or you may have guessed it too many times. |
Use the tile feedback as your record of what each guess established. Solving the word ends the round; after six unsuccessful accepted guesses, the round is over.
Repeated letters: count copies, not just letters
The answer can contain a letter more than once. Feedback first marks every letter in the right position. It then matches the other guessed letters against the copies still available in the answer, working from left to right. Each answer letter can be used only once.
Example answer: APPLE. Guess: ALLEY. These are teaching examples, not today's answer.
| Position | Guessed letter | Feedback | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A | ✓ Right place | A is the first letter of APPLE. |
| 2 | L | ↔ Different place | APPLE has one L, at position 4. |
| 3 | L | × No unused copy | The only L was already matched to the L at position 2. |
| 4 | E | ↔ Different place | E belongs at position 5. |
| 5 | Y | × No unused copy | APPLE has no Y. |
An × on the second L does not mean every L is absent. It means this guess included more copies than the answer could match.
Another example: APPLE with the guess PUPPY. The feedback is ↔ × ✓ × ×. The P at position 3 is correct and gets counted first. One other P is available, so the P at position 1 receives ↔. The P at position 4 receives ×: there is no third P in APPLE. U and Y are absent.
Daily puzzles, practice and saved progress
The daily game has a shared answer for each UTC date. A new daily word becomes available at midnight UTC. Check the game's UTC date rather than assuming your own local date has already changed the puzzle.
Practice gives you separate rounds and does not change your daily streak. Your daily history is stored in the browser you use; another device, another browser or cleared site data will not carry that history over.
Rules questions
Can a word contain the same letter twice?
Yes. Match the number of copies indicated by the feedback. One confirmed copy does not prove there is only one in the answer.
Why was a real English word rejected?
A game's accepted-word list is narrower than the whole language. Regional spellings and uncommon forms may not all be included. Try another word, or report a word-list issue. Rejection does not, by itself, mean a spelling is wrong.
Does a wrong guess end the game?
An accepted wrong guess uses one attempt and gives you clues. You can continue until you solve the word or have used all six attempts.
